  After the outbreak of the Second Punic War, Hannibal led his army through Spain, crossed the snowy Alps all year round, reached the Apennines and captured Cannae, an important Roman granary. Hannibal had part of the infantry occupy a wide front in the middle of the protruding part of the half-moon, deliberately "showing weakness" to lure the enemy to break through the central part. He also ordered 500 strong soldiers to hide their daggers and prepare to pretend to surrender to the Roman army if necessary, so that they could blend into the enemy line and disrupt the enemy from within. At the same time, Hannibal placed 10,000 cavalry on both sides of the infantry half-moon formation to defend both flanks and prepare to outflank the enemy from behind.

  On the morning of August 2, the Roman army made a pre-emptive attack and concentrated its forces on the central bulge of Hannibal's half-moon infantry formation. After a fierce battle, Hannibal ordered 500 soldiers with daggers to run to the Roman line and hand over their swords, spears and shields to surrender. Believing this, the Roman army put them behind the line and continued the attack. At this point, the infantry protruding from the center of Hannibal's convex half-moon formation gradually retreated, making the Romans think that they were routing, so they made the infantry of the following echelon join the battle together and attack. Seeing that the Roman army was all in the pocket, Hannibal hastily ordered the main body of infantry on both flanks to attack their flanks, while the cavalry came from the rear of the flank. At noon, the wind from the southeast was blowing so hard that the Roman soldiers could not open their eyes and could not use their projectile weapons accurately, nor could they avoid the arrows and stones that came downwind from Hannibal's army. At this moment, 500 soldiers pretending to surrender took out their hidden daggers and stabbed the enemy in front of them, then took swords, spears and shields from the dead, and rampaged through the Roman army, killing them in every direction. The Roman army was in disarray when they were struck by this blow, and they fought until darkness and were completely defeated.

  In Hannibal's thinking, there were many elements that determined the system of the Cannae War, but he seized the most important ones and thought very carefully, taking into account almost every possible element, such as the wind direction, formation, the fraudulent surrender of 500 soldiers, etc. It can be said that these elements that he took into consideration decided the victory of the war, and they were indispensable.
