Experience Method-woodmam

As for rural children and teenagers, compared with urban children and teenagers, their information is still closed and their understanding of life still remains only in the countryside. Some modern living rules and good habits with the characteristics of the times are still far away for them. Therefore, when teachers talk to them about observing the one-meter line, respecting others' privacy, being respectful of others' private space, riding on the right side of a rolling staircase, etc., these habits often ring hollow in their minds.

Therefore, experience is a very effective way to understand more accurately the importance of habits and the benefits of habits for themselves and others.

  II. Case

Baum developed the habit of bringing his own food through experience, and his mother and teacher had a lot of trouble in the process.

Baum was a 7-year-old boy who often forgot to bring his lunch to school. Whenever this happened, his mother had to drive to school to bring his son's lunch between her busy work schedule. Although the mother told Baum several times about this matter, Baum just can't remember to bring meals. Later, the mother followed the expert's advice and decided to let her child experience what it was like not to bring a meal. When she got home, mom first talked to Baum and told him, "Mom believes you are old enough to take care of your own business. It's time for you to take responsibility for bringing your own lunch. Mommy is very busy at work every day and can't always bring your lunch to school. In the future, mommy will not bring your lunch to school anymore.

Baum listened to his mother and nodded his head in agreement. However, when this plan started to be implemented, there were some interruptions because Baum's teacher lent Baum money to buy his own food. For this reason, mom negotiated with Baum's teacher again and told her what she thought. The teacher promised not to lend him any more money to buy lunch and let Baum go through the ordeal on his own. Once, Baum forgot to bring his lunch again and asked his teacher to borrow money. The teacher said, "I'm sorry, Baum, we've made a deal that you'll have to take care of your own lunch." Baum called his mother and asked her to bring him lunch. Mom kindly but firmly refused his request.

In the end, one of Baum's classmates gave Baum half of his sandwich, but Baum still suffered from hunger all afternoon. He thus experienced the unpleasant feeling of being hungry because he did not bring his own lunch. After that, Mom noticed that Baum rarely forgot to bring his lunch.

This case illustrates the importance of experience in habit formation. In order to help her son develop the habit of taking responsibility for himself, her mother took an experiential approach to Bob, letting him experience firsthand the trouble and embarrassment that comes with not bringing a meal. There are times when parents tell us so many things that don't work, when it might be more beneficial to habit development if we experience it ourselves.

One mother practiced such an experience with her child. The mother recounted that

Ning was brought up by his grandmother when he was a child. She had a traditional belief that children should wake up more than once, otherwise it would be bad for their brain development. Under the care of his grandmother, Ning developed the bad habit of having to wake up more than three times.

After I started elementary school, I was determined to help Ningning correct this problem. I said to Ning Ning, "According to my mother, getting up immediately after waking up has no effect on the development of the brain. Always let mommy call several times before you can get up, not only delaying time, but also making mommy unhappy. Let's talk about it and change this problem, okay?" Ning Ning agreed with me.

Under my supervision and encouragement, Ningning could get up quickly at first. As time went on, it became unsatisfactory.

I began to look for opportunities to make Ningning change his inability to get up quickly through self-torture. In order to enrich the children's spare time and build up their love for the PLA from a young age, the school organized a "one-day camping activity" for them on Sundays. On Saturday night, Ning was so excited that he couldn't sleep. When I woke him up at five o'clock on Sunday morning, he was sleeping soundly. When I saw that the time had come, I called out "Ning Ning, it's time to get up" in my normal tone of voice and recorded my voice with a tape recorder. Seeing that Ning had moved and fallen asleep again, I secretly walked away gladly.

At seven o'clock, I heard Ning Ning crying out in his room, "Mom, why didn't you wake me up? The students have all left ......" I went over, turned the recorder on, and said, "Mom called you, but you didn't develop the good habit of getting up quickly, so you slept through it again." Ning was dumbfounded - I had already told him that not being able to get up quickly would sooner or later hit a wall. He was so anxious, remorseful, and frustrated that he punched himself in the head, stomped his feet, and called himself an idiot. ...... I went about my business as if nothing had happened. When his mood was more stable, I comforted and patiently said to him, "Ning Ning, don't be sad, there will be more opportunities like this in the future, after the holidays, I will take you to your cousin's military camp, how about that?" At this point, he stopped sobbing. I went on to tell him, "One learns from one's mistakes, always remember today's lesson, then you won't suffer such a loss again, and mommy believes you will definitely change your inability to get up quickly."

From that day on, a miracle really happened. Every day, Ning would set his own alarm clock before going to bed. When the bell rang, he would get up quickly by himself. Even during the stressful time of the college entrance exam, he did what he was told and didn't let me worry about it ......

A Tsinghua student once recalled the following.

I hadn't run 1500 meters before high school, but our high school physical education class required a test of 2000 meters. Just heard the news I was really scared, but also specifically to try to run the most how many meters. The high school playground is 200 meters a lap, 2000 meters is equivalent to 10 laps, which is a very scary concept for me at that time. I felt nothing when I ran the first two or three laps, but after 5 laps, I felt so tired that I couldn't lift my legs, and it was hard to breathe. Because I had never run more than 1500 meters before. But I can't do it in high school, I have to pass, so I have to insist, insist, and insist even if I can't run down. But do not try to know, in fact, as long as the effort to persevere through the most painful section, but the back does not feel anything, like two legs automatically running forward, and not too tired feeling, as if it is only natural to continue, not just so uncomfortable. This finally persevered and found that I actually ran down 2000 meters continuously. At that time, I really felt that I was so powerful, even before I could not even think of things to do.
